How Much to Water Indoor Plants?

Overwatering is the leading cause of death for houseplants, far more so than any other factor. We tend to go for the watering can in our eagerness to care for and fill our houses with lush vegetation, but this is only sometimes the answer.

The amount of water that houseplants require is often underestimated.  Consider the soil before making decisions. It is acceptable for the top inch or two of the soil to be dry, but if it is more than that, the plant has to be watered.

You can either soak the plant in water or rinse water over the soil. In the first case let the plant in the water in its plastic container for half an hour, then let it drain completely before placing it back where it belongs. In the latter case slowly pur water over the soil around the stem of the plant. Make sure the water can distribute well.
